All the children in this book seem more like adults than children. Their actions and thoughts add to the uncanny nature of the book. For instance, Oskar's murderous thoughts aren't something one would attribute to a normal 12 year old.

I think the the fact that Hakan is a pedophile adds to the strangeness as well, because the way the children act almost justify it. They don't act like the innocent beings we imagine them to be. They act more adult and aware than their parents.Rachelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12634771631419002073noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1835335388339028792.post-54770807825065173412010-12-10T16:59:51.763-08:002010-12-10T16:59:51.763-08:00I completely agree with what you're saying abo...I completely agree with what you're saying about children and their parents roles being switched. It's almost as if the children are trying to protect the adults rather than the adults protecting the children. For example, Oskar keeps his mom in the dark about his bullying because he does not want to take his mom out of her oblivious and blissful state. Or, perhaps, his pride prevents him from telling her. Thus, acting more grownup.

It seems he grew up more after he met Eli. Before, he had been close with his mom, eating sweets and watching certain shows together. After, though, he becomes more distant from her, and stops doing childish things.Lindsayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06529316419243964825noreply@blogger.com
